Pre-Finished Engineered Hardwood Flooring
What is Pre-Finished Engineered Wood Flooring
The wood flooring industry has gone through many changes through the years. One big transition was the introduction of pre-finished engineered wood flooring. Before these products were being manufactured, hardwood flooring was always installed as raw unfinished planks that were then stained and finished on site. With the pre-finished engineered hardwood floors the stain, and finish is applied directly at the manufacturer. This process allows the flooring to be installed right out of the box, and will have you moving back into your space faster.
There are several advantages when choosing a pre-finished engineered hardwood floor over a traditional site finished product. In most cases a prefinished floor will be more budget friendly depending on the cost per square foot of the material. Secondly, due to the fact that this type of product has already been finished, it will drastically cut down on the amount of time it takes for us to get the floor installed. Another great benefit of this type of flooring is that the customer is able to select a product with a specialty treatment, or finish at a much lower price than with a custom site finished floor.
The short answer here is yes! Your engineered product is compromised with a real hardwood top veneer, which is referred to as the wear layer. The bottom, or backing layers, are typically constructed from a birch plywood backing. This multi layer makeup is what gives the flooring its dimensional stability, and is what allows us to glue down directly to your subfloor without worry.
While not all pre-finished engineered floors are able to be refinished, many are. The largest factor in this case this the thickness of the wear layer. As you go up in price, usually, you will notice that the top veneer is much larger than your more budget friendly options. Choosing a floor with a thick wear layer is one of the most important aspects to consider in your purchase.
Prefinished hardwood flooring typically costs between $3 to $20 per square foot for materials. However, many great products are available at the lower end of this price range. The cost savings when comparing to a site-finished floor comes from no longer needing to sand the flooring after installation. This allows for a much faster completion time as well.
Typically, a job between 1000-1500 square feet will take approximately 1 week from start to finish. Determining factors include tearing out existing flooring, and subfloor preparation. These are two things that will increase the amount of time needed. Your project manager will be able to give you a better idea of timing during your at home consultation.
After you have your new Pre-Finished Engineered Hardwood Flooring installed it must be properly cleaned.
When installing a urethane finished Pre-Finished Engineered Hardwood Flooring, the bona floor cleaning kit is all you need . This kit can be purchased at most big box home improvement stores, or you can purchase directly from us.
When installing a European oil finished Pre-Finished Engineered Hardwood Flooring the care is different. You will need to follow manufacturers recommended instructions. Most manufacturers of the european oils have a kit similar to the bona product. In addition to normal cleaning most European oiled floors will need to be put on a maintenance schedule to do a refresher treatment every 4-6 months, and will need to have a new coat of oil applied after a few years once the floor begins to look worn. More upkeep with this type of floor, but you will be able to go much longer between refinishing or replacement.
One benefit of Engineered Hardwood Flooring is the ability to repair individual boards without harming the rest of your floor. This makes a repair last hours rather than days. Very minimal dust will be created during this process, furniture removal is normally not needed.
